Conquer & Comprehend Chapters! :)

"Read Chapter 7 for Monday's class." How many of us students actually like hearing these words? Not me, for sure. I might skim through pages before the teacher starts teaching the topic so I understand it a little bit but I will not read the chapter entirely. So, in this post, I'll be telling you how you can thoroughly read chapters! [Also, there is a big difference between studying and reading. In short, reading is just a part of studying but not vice versa.]

Step 1:
Skim!
Turn pages and glance at the headings, sub-headings, any words in bold, diagrams, etc. just so you know a little bit about what you are going to read.

Step 2:
Divide and Conquer!
When you open your textbook and turn to the chapter only to find out that it is 30 pages long does not help in reading the chapter at all, right? So divide the chapter! You can do a page at a time or cover a particular section or sometimes they may already be divided for you! This is helpful because when you read everything little by little it doesn't seem like 30 pages!

Step 3:
Introductions and Summaries!
Read any introduction and/or summary before you actually start reading the chapter. This will help you get an idea of what the chapter is about before you actually read it!

Step 4:
Read & Mark!
Finally it's time to read! Read section by section and highlight/underline anything important!

Tips:
  • Read slowly - this way you will remember more of what you read so that means you don't need to read it over and over again! (that is if you've understood everything)
  • If you don't understand, read and read again - or you could ask someone to explain!
  • Take breaks - after you finish reading a section or two (depending on how long the section is), take a small break for about 5 minutes and then continue!
  • Sit and read - so you don't fall asleep! (it's happened to me a couple of times!)
I hoped these tips helped you! Hopefully you don't look like this when you read anymore! ;)
